In ancient Greece, mathematics was used not only for practical ends, but as a tool for understanding the cosmos in as deep a manner as possible. MathsNet has a series of articles exploring the history and construction of Sacred Geometry beginning in ancient Greece. Further discussion of contemplative studies within modern Hellenism may be found at Temenos Theon and Hellenic Polytheist Notebook, as well as on the Rosy Fingered Dawn email list.
Sacred Geometry is a fascinating field of exploration, and yet many people feel at a loss when it comes to approaching the subject. On this page, I try to gently introduce geometry in basic contemplative exercises, which I hope will help some people warm up to the subject. Feel free to follow along with your own compass and straight edge.

Spend at least a few moments with each image, contemplating the empty spaces and patterns, before moving on to the next image.

It all begins with an empty sheet of paper. The compass point (marked with a red X) is embedded in the paper. A circle is extended around it, equidistant from the center point at all points of the circle. Draw a circle, but very slowly, even-handed, mindful of your body's subtle movements. |

The compass point is then moved to an arbitrary point on the circle's edge. The pencil is placed on the original compass point (center of the circle). Another circle is extended. Each circle's center is on the edge of the other circle. As you draw, note the flow of your intuition and subtle reactions. |

Straight lines intersecting the circles barely hint at the patterns present within the circles. How many other ways can these basic points be connected? Using your own pencil, compass, and straight edge, experiment with variations. Remain mindful of your concentration and emotional state. |

Note how the circle edges are not boundaries. Straight lines continue beyond their containment. Small triangle in top center, extending to circle bottoms. A larger triangle may be formed here by connecting the point where red lines intersect circle edges. But the lines extend onward. In the same way, your inner life extends beyond the boundaries in which your heart would be confined. Observe how you extend beyond limitations in life. What can you learn from seeing how open and expansive you really are? |

While extending beyond your perceived limitations, maintain interior order. Moderation in all things, including expansion and harmony. Inward stillness, even discipline, provide a foundation for outward radiance and freedom. |

Two circles is not a limit. Patterns seen in Two repeat in Three. Patters seen in Three, extend beyond. Infinity is everyday life. |
